Tory has had a wide variety of professional experiences in the design, building & construction industry. He began his career as a union carpenter’s apprentice; then a custom cabinetmaker, home remodeling contractor and commercial construction superintendent. Then off to college at the age of 30, receiving his Bachelor’s of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech. Tory is currently the president/principal of the stephen group, inc. in Mars Hill, NC, which is small multidiscipline architectural design firm. Tory’s professional experience has encompassed not only exciting architectural design but project management of very successful multi-million dollar projects for law enforcement and government clients.
His true life’s work has always been his family and he has been blessed with a fantastic wife and two great kids. Family life has brought to him the most difficult challenges he has ever faced, but those challenges have brought unparalleled growth and maturity. Tory lives in the western region of the North Carolina mountains with his wife and children (when they are home), three dogs, a cat, a good size garden and 12 or 13 chickens. The chickens just move to fast to get an accurate count.
